Asbestos & Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that most often occurs in the thin membrane lining the lungs or abdomen. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. This rate is steadily rising. Virtually all cases of Mesothelioma in the U.S. are linked to asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma can appear and progress very rapidly. However, it usually does not manifest itself until several decades after the first exposure to asbestos.
Other asbestos-related diseases include lung cancer and asbestosis (a scarring of the lungs that causes shortness of breath). Among those workers who are at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases include insulators, pipe fitters, plumbers, boilermakers, shipyard workers, railroad workers, refinery workers, power plant workers, paper mill workers, and others. It is important to note several things: (1) asbestos-related diseases may not manifest themselves until many years after the exposure occurred; and (2) workers do not have to work directly with asbestos or asbestos-containing products to be at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases. Those who work around such products may also be at risk.
